The LSRS, Inc., in collaboration with the UW-Superior Music Department recently welcomed pianist Brian Holland to the inaugural Ragtime Recital in Webb Recital Hall. Brian wowed the crowd with his dazzling displays of pyrotechnical pianism, encyclopedic knowledge of music from the first half of the 20th century, and tender musical expressions of human spirit. Brian is an internationally renowned pianist who was brought to Superior, Wisconsin through the efforts of the LSRS, Inc., whose mission is to preserve ragtime as well as bring this truly American art-form to the people of northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. The next Ragtime Recital will occur on Saturday, March 3oth at UW-Superior, and feature pianist Ethan Uslan. Mr. Uslan lives in Charlotte, North Carolina where he presents his music and storytelling on his very own podcast - The Carolina Shout. His concerts are filled with passion, humor, virtuosity, and a deep love for America's rich musical past. His vast repertoire includes original arrangements of Civil-War era songs, New Orleans Jazz, 1920s Charlestons, blues, stomps, Harlem stride piano, swing, Cuban rumbas, jazzed-up versions of classical masterpieces, and one Hawaiian song called Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula.
In November 2018, the Lake Superior Ragtime Society is excited to inaugurate a twice-yearly recital series featuring world-caliber ragtime and early jazz musicians in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Superior music department. Concerts will be held in Webb Recital Hall on the UWS campus. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance.
The 2018/19 season kicks off with Brian Holland, one of the hottest pianists on the planet today! In March we will be entertained by the brilliant and effervescent Ethan Uslan. Both men are winners of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Contest, and are in demand at festivals around the world.
